Utilize the outdoors

By bringing some of the natural elements into your home, you can help to purify the air and therefore provide a fresher scent! This can be done by simply opening a few windows in your home to regularly refresh the air, or by bringing some typically “outdoor” plants in to aid in cleansing and purifying the air. Some easy-to-care-for plants that can accomplish this are eucalyptus, lavender, and jasmine.

Clean your garbage disposal

A dirty garbage disposal is an issue that will sneak up on you. If you ever notice a stale, smelly aroma coming from your kitchen that you can’t trace back to a trash can, rotten food, or a dirty fridge, odds are your disposal is the culprit. Luckily, there are many simple ways to refresh your garbage disposal without having to open up pipes. Lemon, orange, and lime rinds are an easy and effective tool in eliminating smells coming from your garbage disposal. If this doesn’t eliminate the odor, baking soda and warm water down your drain is a pretty near-perfect solution to refreshing the smell of a clean kitchen.

Wash trash cans

Even if you swap out your trash bags each day, or even each time you cook a large meal to eliminate odors from taking over your kitchen, your trash bin itself is a great harborer of lasting odors that your trash bags weren’t able to contain. It happens to all of us! Rather than blaming your trash can, simply rinsing out your trash can and scrubbing down with some dish soap can do the trick.

Refresh carpets and furniture

No matter how clean your home is on the reg, odors will always find a way to attach themselves to carpet, rugs, and any kind of upholstered furniture. No, this doesn’t mean you have to replace them – in fact, baking soda can do the trick! Sprinkle baking soda across your carpet, rugs, furniture, and even your mattresses, and let sit for 10-30 minutes. If there are any specific areas you notice hold more odors than others, use a brush or rag to work the baking soda into those areas for a stronger effect. After letting the baking soda settle, vacuum the areas and ensure all of the baking soda is out.
